Ah thats interesting reading Julians post because I disagree, but not because I want to, only because I have to make a small correction..so nothing personal! People who play 'LIVE' are out there to market their songs. All Live shows are for that purpose to drum up support for the artistes in order for them to sell their merchandise which of course the main item is their Cds, followed by whatever else, mugs, teashirts and keyrings. If an artiste does not tour or play LIVE performances at all then people are neither captured into the spirit of their music or their presence and the whole point of gigging Live is to convince people they are worthy. Anybody can make a CD trust me, but only the good artistes can play LIVE. So I can most definately confirm that in the current market 'playing Live' is very much required to sell records though not to say that this will not be so in the future. Btw Julian, there will be a licenced Late Bar incorporated into The Coffee Shop thread...dont forget to pop in..

I wouldn't have thought that the Live performances would have that much impact in record sales because the number of people that could go to them would be pretty small relative to the number of CDs you need to shift to succeed. I'm sure concerts and touring are a great way to earn extra income but I think you have to sell the records first to drum up the audience rather than the other way round. I think Ray's music is the sort of music that people aren't that interested in buying. They may be happy to watch him live or in a music video but I can't see that translating to record sales unless they actually want to listen to the music without seeing the performance that goes with it. Speaking personally, as much as I like him as a performer, I can't muster any enthusiasm for buying a Ray album at all Regards Julian

Yes take your point Julian. I too would never buy an Album of Rays. I certainly see what you are saying about live concerts too. Stadium seat prices are all different depending on the act so of course if seats were say, take a random price of 28 each there is actually a lot of money drawn from concerts. When overheads are taken out, the artiste still does fairly well. There is every sense in playing Live when so much money is being taken off artistes in relation to downloading on the Internet. I would imagine that most of them are peed off having to perform live because so much of what they should be earning just goes up the wall or evaporates into thin air. There are constant disputes about all this and I guarantee you not many artistes are very happy about the state of music today. Live music is a must for most to get some money in their pocket as they only get a small percentage of each CD, as well as the fact that its mostly obtained for nothing via internet. You might note George Michael had decided to tour again. These people dont do that unless they have to. But we are talking about Ray and your right about Ray of course. Unfortunately though there are lots of mums, dads, grandads, and grandmothers who will run out and buy anything he does because middle of the road sells and it probably is the best selling music of all as it appeals across the board.

I just read this information and thought thats a lot of dosh Take That pocket £400K from 'X Factor' Sunday, December 17 2006, 11:34 GMT By Daniel Kilkelly Take That were paid £400,000 for their appearance on last night's X Factor finale. The boyband performed their hit single Patience live on the show and sang a duet with winner Leona Lewis, who had been a fan of the boys when she was a teenager. An insider told The People: "Getting Take That on the show was the ultimate finale. Show bosses wanted them there at all costs. Their fan base incorporates people of all ages. The producers wanted to show that X Factor is more than just a talent contest. With big name acts like this, it shows why it's still so popular." They had Westlife on the show too did,nt they, so it was a very expensive Finale. Oh and has anyone seen Simon Cowell advertising his lates show Britains Got Talent..they want anyone from Singers to dancers to snake charmers... ( if I am not allowed to print the article...here is the link..and I will just have to get MODIFIED.. ) www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds40838.html

Whitney tips Leona for stardom 11.38, Tue Dec 19 2006
Whitney Houston has given her backing to X Factor winner Leona Lewis.
The diva is said to be convinced the 21-year-old will be an international superstar, and has even offered to mentor her.
Leona is also being courted by music mogul Clive Davis who is keen to make her a star in the US.
The X Factor winner looks odds on to secure the Christmas number one spot.
The single, a cover of the Kelly Clarkson hit A Moment Like This, will be in shops on Wednesday.
Meanwhile Jamelia has made up with X Factor judge Simon Cowell after he called her a "one hit wonder" because of comments she apparently made about Leona.
The pop star caused an upset recently when she allegedly called 21-year-old Leona's voice "Mariah Carey circa 1990".
But Jamelia said: "I did not say anything against Leona. Simon Cowell was very silly believing what he read about what I had apparently said. But he called me and apologised for what he said."
