James Brown dies, 73 Monday, December 25 2006, 10:21 GMT
By James Welsh, International Editor
"Godfather of Soul" James Brown has died at a hospital in Atlanta, Georgia at the age of 73.
Brown was admitted to Emory Crawford Long Hospital yesterday (Sunday) and was suffering with pneumonia. His agent, Frank Copsidas, told the AP that Brown died at approximately 1:45am Eastern on Christmas Day.
"On Saturday, he went to his dentist up in Atlanta, and his dentist told him something was wrong, and he sent him to a doctor immediately," Copsidas told the BBC World Service.
Born on May 3, 1933 in Barnwell, South Carolina, the "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" singer had a troubled start - entering juvenile detention in 1948 - but upon release, he turned his attentions to music and had his first hit in 1956. He went on to have continued success in the Billboard charts, but continued personal troubles resulted in a three-year imprisonment from 1988-1991 and a spate of arrests during the 1990s. In 2005, he performed during Live 8 and last month he was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame.
Sad news.

Just as I thought I have read they are going to do a biopic of James Browns life etc and put it on TV. It has to happen because he was just so fantastic...
I hear at the moment he is lying in State...not many people lie in State for people to pay their last respects, so it just goes to show how very important James Brown has been to the era..
Yes I will miss him too...infectious showmanship is very hard to replace...

James Brown to have public funeral Thursday, December 28 2006, 11:38 GMT
By Matt Houghton
Soul singer James Brown, who died on Christmas Day, is to have a public funeral in Georgia this coming weekend.
The 73-year-old performer will lie in state in New York's Apollo Theatre today, before his body is taken to Augusta, Georgia.
The funeral will take place at the 8,500-seat arena bearing his name at 1pm local time and is expected to draw a number of significant figures from the entertainment industry.
Reverend Sharpton, who will conduct the service, said that he felt disbelief and sadness after seeing Brown's body at a funeral home.
He said, "I couldn't even begin to describe it, to walk round his house and he not be there."
